“Fifteens” rugby is a game of 8 forwards and 7 backs per team whose goal is to gain yards down the field by carrying, kicking or passing the ball laterally or backwards to a player who is running onto the ball. Unlike football, in rugby the ball may not be passed forward to gain yards and to do so would result in a stoppage of play for a set piece called a “scrum” to re-start the ball. In a scrum, the 8 forwards from each team come together in an organized way to contest and gain possession of the ball with their feet so that it can be presented to the back-line players to begin the ball’s movement down the field toward the goal line. Scoring occurs when the ball is literally “touched down” within the in-goal area called a “try” which is worth 5 points. A “try” may be converted by kicking the ball through the goal posts and is worth 2 points.
